PowerRIP -- Version 2.15
Not just another MOD extractor...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MODRIP 1.0 was a quick little program I made in less than an hour that only
ripped MODs from demos, and used a command-line interface. Then 3 months
later, I made the even more powerful PowerRIP 2.0, a full-screen extractor
with all the bells & whistles including pull-down menus, windows, mouse
support, MOD/S3M/STM/669/MTM/FAR extraction, and more!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
How It Works
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It tries searching the file you specify for a MOD/S3M/STM/669/MTM/FAR
identification, and extracts the song from the file to the disk.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speed!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
PowerRIP is surprisingly fast! Since I recently upgrade from a 386DX/33 to a
486DX2/66, I can't get exact measures, because it's too fast to time. But
I've noticed that PowerRIP is slightly faster in the searching & extraction.
Here is a chart comparing the features of PowerRIP 2.15 and EXMOD 0.3+++:
PowerRIP 2.15 EXMOD 0.3+++
MOD Extraction Yes Yes
669 Extraction Yes No

MID Extraction No Yes

Proof That It Works...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have tested PowerRIP on five demos so far that successfully extract: The
Good, the Bad, and the Ugly by Surprise! Productions (1 MOD), Minus 40 by
Eterno (1 MOD), Dizzy Sensations by Anarchy (1 MOD), Greenhouse by Mega-
Busters (3 MODs), and Hell by Renaissance (3 669s). And the result: they
sound better when played with Dual Module Player 2.82 (my favorite!) than in
the demo! I have also tested in it on four other Renaissance demos, but
PowerRIP could not extract any MODs, probably because they remove the I.D.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To Further Compress...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MODs: Run MODCLEAN (now included) on it.
S3Ms: ?
STMs: ?
669s: Get into Composer 669, load the 669, and save it
again.
MTMs: Get into MultiTracker, load the MTM, and save it
again.
FARs: ?

When Extracting...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hell, by Renaissance 11/93 (3 669s):
In Scan Setup, check Un-titled 669s, uncheck all the others, and scan
HELL.EXE. The 3rd song won't play in DMP 2.82 or earlier for some odd
reason, but it plays in Composer 669.
Second Reality, by Future Crew 10/93 (2 S3Ms):
In Scan Setup, check S3Ms, uncheck all the others, and scan REALITY.FC.
The songs won't play in DMP 2.82 or earlier because they are somehow
coded so you can't rip the music, but you can rip the samples from them
using S3MRIP by Patch/Avalanche. (If you want the songs to play, you need
to download the songs from Digital Oxygene under 2ND_S3M.ARJ...see
bottom!)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
After scanning files, when it ask what file to save it to, check the title
(listed in parenthesis). If it's just a bunch of random garbage then skip
it - it's not a music file.
Some crews have purposely removed or changed the I.D. in their demos so the
song(s) won't be "ripped" or "stolen" by other programs (like PowerRIP), and
therefore cannot be detected by PowerRIP. But in later releases I may
implement another way of identifying MODs other than the traditional MOD I.D.
check...maybe something like checking bytes to see if they conform with the
ProTracker standard (i.e. checking to see if the pattern order table only has
ASCII values of 0 to 128, or if the patterns have a valid note range).

Answers to Common Questions
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Was MODCLEAN written by us?
A: No...read the MODCLEAN documentation if you're not too lazy..
Q: Is EXMOD 0.3+++ really faster than MODRIP?
A: Yes, it is...but it doesn't beat PowerRIP!!

(to Chris: I added a feature where it tells you if it'll be too
big, and if it's a valid 669)
